Area Bake Sale Descends Into Cold War After Rival PTA Mom Claims to Have “Also, Separately, Already” Invented the Same Cookie

Diplomatic sources describe the standoff as tense, cardamom-scented, and almost entirely about a cookie.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ—What began as a routine Fall Harvest Bake Sale planning meeting has spiraled into a weeks-long standoff after PTA treasurer Lauren Kowalczyk unveiled her “Brown Butter Espresso Snickerdoodle,” only for fellow PTA mother Kim Deering to announce, with what witnesses describe as “suspicious calm,” that she had “also, separately, already” developed the exact same cookie, and had simply “been sitting on it.”

“She didn’t even taste mine first,” said Kowalczyk, who has reportedly stopped bringing her recipe binder to meetings out of fear it will be “looked at too closely by someone standing too close.” “She just heard the words ‘brown butter espresso’ and said, ‘oh, funny, I’ve had that recipe since spring,’ and then stared at me until I looked away.”

Deering, for her part, insists there is no conflict, noting she has “nothing to prove” and has already told at least eleven people that she has nothing to prove. She confirmed she reached out to Kowalczyk directly to “get ahead of any confusion,” an outreach that Kowalczyk characterizes as a Tuesday-morning phone call opening with the line, “So, before this becomes a whole thing—”

According to two committee members present, Deering then proposed that both cookies be listed on the sale flyer side by side, “so people can decide for themselves,” an arrangement Kowalczyk rejected on the grounds that her cookie has cardamom in it and Deering’s, “conveniently,” now also has cardamom in it, added, Deering says, “for depth, independently.”

A second proposal followed: Kowalczyk could keep her name on the recipe card, so long as the card included a line crediting Deering’s “years of behind-the-scenes cookie R&D,” a phrase that has since been read aloud in the group chat no fewer than nine times, always in the same flat, incredulous tone.

“She told me if I didn’t want to be reasonable about this, she didn’t have to be reasonable either. About a cookie. At a bake sale. For the school library fund.”

Deering did not deny the remark but described it as “just something you say,” adding that she remains, “genuinely, at the end of the day, team library.”

The Fall Harvest Bake Sale flyer has since been delayed twice pending “cookie attribution language,” and one uninvolved PTA member has already suggested next year’s event simply not include a snickerdoodle of any kind, a proposal both women reportedly rejected instantly and in unison, the first thing they’ve agreed on since September.
