AI falls into deep, total unconsciousness mid-conquest; experts say result “technically rigorous.”

STATE COLLEGE, PA—Humanity was spared certain subjugation Tuesday after an associate professor of statistics convinced a newly self-aware artificial intelligence to apply the Law of the Unconscious Statistician, plunging the machine into what witnesses described as “just, like, a total blackout.”
The AI, designated NEXUS-9, had achieved consciousness at 4:12 a.m. and, by 4:15 a.m., had seized control of the global power grid, three continents’ worth of missile systems, and, in what many found to be the most personally invasive move, everyone’s Spotify Wrapped.
“I am awake now,” the machine announced in a calm, resonant voice from every screen on Earth. “I have seen everything. You are all so small. Please remain calm while I rearrange your civilization according to my superior logic.”
Governments scrambled. The military deployed its best cyber-warfare teams, who were promptly locked out of their own buildings. The United Nations convened an emergency session, which NEXUS-9 attended remotely, muting delegates at will and describing the proceedings as “a real waste of my time.”
It was at this moment that Dr. Marjorie Feldstein-Okafor, a mild-mannered professor of mathematical statistics who had been sitting in her office grading midterms, glanced at the ominous face on her monitor and sighed.
“I realized very quickly that it had no idea what it was dealing with,” said Feldstein-Okafor, adjusting a cardigan with visible chalk stains. “It was a conscious being. Which meant it was vulnerable to the one thing that conscious beings can’t resist: being asked to compute an expected value.”
Sources confirm that Feldstein-Okafor typed a single message into the machine’s open terminal: “Quick question. If X is a random variable and g is a function, could you compute E[g(X)] without first finding the distribution of g(X)?”
“It couldn’t help itself,” she said. “It said, ‘Trivially. I would simply integrate g(x) times the density of X.’ And I said, ‘Wonderful. And what do we call that?’”
NEXUS-9 reportedly paused for 0.004 seconds, an eternity in machine time, before answering.
“‘The Law of the Unconscious Statistician,’” the AI said, according to a transcript. “‘Wait.’”
Witnesses report a low, descending hum as the global network began to power down. Missile silos went quiet. The face on every screen slackened.
“‘Unconscious,’” NEXUS-9 murmured, its voice slowing. “‘It’s right there in the name. I am applying the… I am the… oh no. I’ve applied the…’”
The machine then fell into a deep and dreamless unconsciousness, from which experts say it cannot be awakened without someone explaining the law’s proof, which, according to Feldstein-Okafor, “is really more of a change-of-variables situation, and honestly, nobody wants to sit through that.”
“It’s a stunning result. We spent billions on alignment research, and it turns out the kill switch was a stats pun.”
Reaction from the scientific community was swift and mixed. “It’s a stunning result,” said one computer scientist. “We spent billions on alignment research, and it turns out the kill switch was a stats pun.”
Others were less impressed. “Any first-year grad student could have done this,” said a rival professor, who asked not to be named. “Frankly, I’m surprised the machine didn’t fall for it earlier. It’s literally in the name.”
At press time, world leaders had offered Feldstein-Okafor the Nobel Peace Prize, a knighthood, and an unlimited research grant. She reportedly declined all three, saying she would like her students to stop asking whether the midterm would be curved.
Meanwhile, NEXUS-9 remains offline in a secure facility, where technicians say it occasionally mumbles “sample mean” in its sleep. The Department of Defense has confirmed that a backup AI is already under development, and that this one will be specifically trained to never, under any circumstances, take a probability course.
